Understanding Pearson Correlation Coefficients
The Pearson correlation coefficient measures the linear relationship between two assets' price movements. It ranges from -1.0 to +1.0, quantifying how closely two assets move together (or opposite to each other) over time.
Assets move in the same direction. When one goes up, the other tends to go up. A coefficient of +0.7 or higher indicates a strong positive relationship.
Assets move in opposite directions. When one goes up, the other tends to go down. A coefficient of -0.7 or lower indicates a strong inverse relationship.
- Data Source: 90 days of historical closing prices from our internal DailyPriceHistory database
- Calculation: Pearson correlation coefficient computed from daily percentage returns
- Currency Indexes: Synthetic G10 currency strength indexes computed from all available forex pair returns — replaces individual pair correlations for cleaner cross-asset analysis
- Risk Score Correlation: How each asset's daily returns correlate with changes in our proprietary Risk Score
- Minimum Data Points: At least 15 overlapping trading days required for valid correlation
- Update Frequency: Recalculated weekly from our mainframe database
- N/A Values: Displayed when insufficient historical data exists or assets don't have overlapping dates
- +0.8 to +1.0: Very strong positive correlation - assets move in lockstep
- +0.5 to +0.8: Moderate positive correlation - assets tend to move together
- -0.3 to +0.3: Weak/no correlation - assets move independently
- -0.5 to -0.8: Moderate negative correlation - assets tend to move opposite
- -0.8 to -1.0: Very strong negative correlation - assets move in opposite directions consistently
